What size air con do you need?

Undersized units run flat out and die young. Oversized ones cost more and leave the room clammy.

Why sizing matters

Kilowatts, not guesswork.

Air conditioner capacity is measured in kilowatts of cooling. The calculator starts from your room's floor area at roughly 150 watts per square metre, then adjusts for the things that actually move the number in Queensland homes: ceiling height (you cool a volume, not a floor), sun exposure (a west-facing room cops the afternoon heat) and insulation.

It then rounds you to the nearest real unit size - split systems come in standard capacities like 2.5, 3.5, 5.0 and 7.1 kW - because that's what you can actually buy. Very large or open-plan spaces sometimes do better with ducted or multiple heads, which is a conversation we're happy to have.
